  1. No disrespect to the family, obviously. My beef is with the media, who appear to have come back to bite the McCanns on the arse. Clearly, nobody knows anything about the actual case, so speculation has now got out of hand. Not content with ruining a police investigation into the disappearance of a girl, the media are bringing an entire bank down now with wishful thinking.

  3. Yes, and in the meantime, stories that we ought to be interested in – like the absolute crisis in Zimbabwe – are edged out to a bit of Newsnight and Broadcasting House on Radio 4. To be honest, I now skip the first four pages of any tabloid as I can’t be arsed to read more Maddie speculation. The Mirror are even running columns of quotes taken from their web forums on the subject. I give up.

  5. The hunger for news is quite scary. If Sky probably worry that if they don’t have a breaking news alert every 10 seconds no one will watch. So it’s just rumour and speculation and misinformation. Now the papers are no better.

  7. Interestingly we were just discussing this last night with our Youth Group. The question was – What scares you most right now and one of the answers was – The Media and its ability to destroy people’s lives.

  9. I feel terribly sorry for the McCann’s. Primarily for the loss of their daughter. The thought of your daughter being somewhere scared, wanting your help but you not being there is just unbearable. What I find more apalling is that they have been damned by some people who want to say ‘they made a faustian pact with the media and it is coming back to haunt them now.’ It is utter bullshit. They courted publicity because they are desperately hoping, against all evidence, that their daughter may be alive. So they have used whatever publicity they can to keep her in the news. Now the media have turned on her and everybody is blaming them. It is hideous. They have acted with grace and dignity throughout. I admire them immensely. I do understand you are not criticising them Andrew. As for the Portugese police. Yes there has been some xenophobic reporting but I do not believe for one second they had anything to do with their daughter’s disappearance. It defies even the most incredulous logic (go to The Guardian website and look at the timeline to prove this). I’m a fairly liberal bloke but I cannot believe there is not some political motivation behind their arrest.

  11. All good points as usual. However, allow me if I may, AC, to coax a more shouting headline set from your scenario;a.m.”McCANNS CONFESS! EVIL COUPLE IN MADDIE DEATH PACT”p.m.”McCANNS APPEAL TO SCOTLAND YARD – FIND OUR MADDIE, COUPLE BEG!”night”McCANNS CLOSE TO BREAKDOWN. CONSTANT MEDIA PRESSURE AND UPPERCASE EXPOSURE BLAMED”.The police may be puzzled by this terrible case, but I have every faith that Martin Brunt of Sky will solve it.As for Mugabe, clair, all ITN need to do – as they are over there this week – is announce a couple of Zimbabwean oil finds. The Zanu PF regime’ll get ‘changed out’ PDQ then.Shock and Awe, baby

  13. The media Maddy stuff is astonishing. A tragic situation but the way the media is whipping us up is amazing.I was on a golf course (Please note I am a new and crap golfer – I lost 9 balls into water or hedges during the round) and driving a rather swish little buggy (at least I didn’t lose it in a hedge) which had a kind of GPS thing to show you the next hole. I was astonished to suddenly see a Maddie picture pop up with the ‘have you seen her?’ tag! We had a good look and I am pretty sure she was not on a golf course near Bath if that helps anyone?AnonoNick

  15. The Mighty Pierre is spot on with what he says. Those that come on here to leave “jokes” about where Maddie might be, would do well to consider how they would feel if it were their daughter missing.

  17. Tim, as we’ve established before pretty categorically, any lighthearted response to this insane media circus is just that, not a dig at the McCanns. The “joke” isn’t on them, but on those who have become part of the almost surreal over-reaction to this one, isolated, if tragic, case. It was bad enough when Maddie’s face started appearing in chain emails – now we’re not just concerned bystanders, we are judge and jury and forensics experts, led by the nose by the media, who pick this story up and drop it whenever they smell blood. The newspapers need a “resolution” and that means a body or a conviction, or both, hence their disinterest when nothing was happening – during which time they wrote about a shark off the coast of Cornwall – and their mania when something might be, no matter what it is. When I was in Glasgow last weekend I sat, mesmerised, by Sky’s live coverage of the McCanns’ car arriving at Faro Airport. It went on forever, as most of the time we were looking, with Kay Burley, at a road, with some cars on it. I don’t blame the McCanns for trying to “use” the media, but this is a cautionary tale for anyone planning to do the same in the future. People who have never met them and will never meet them call them by their first names. Do you not find that weird? In all this, Maddie is truly lost.I note that the house in my street that had a poster up on the front gate with Maddie’s photo on and a number to ring no longer has it up. Does that mean the once concerned occupier no longer wishes me to look for her? If you get involved, you are part of the story, and part of the circus.

  19. Andrew, wasn’t having a dig at you, I agreed with what you said! My dig was at the anonymous bloggers who came on here and joked about Maddy either being under the bed or on a golf course. It was to them I directed my previous message.

  21. Absolutely. But I don’t think either comment was directed at the McCanns in a nasty way, more at the whole ridiculous situation. (If I find anything offensive, I’ll remove it.) Nick’s post was certainly about the seemingly random nature of the media circus (not that he needs me to defend him). You don’t have to not care about Madeleine to find the thought of her face on the GPS of a golf cart slightly ludicrous. I know I do.

  23. With this whole case it’s best, I find, to bury one’s head in the sand. I’ve given up on TV news and tabloids aren’t worth a bumwipe. I just use BBC news online and a decent broadsheet to avoid all those annoying stories that remind me of how shallow, idiotic and shambolic the human race can be in times of crisis. To even find an interest and discuss at length the media treatment of something like this can be a little tactless. I’m not sure if that’s what Tim Bowling is trying to say as well… I’m all for satire, but this is an actual, ongoing story and anything that adds to the avalanche can only really do damage. Not specifically this blog, I hasten to add.

  25. Tim,Let’s be very clear about a few things here. Firstly I made it very clear at the start of my post that I think the whole situation is tragic. Secondly I make my name quite clear at the bottom of my post. Thirdly, the point I was trying to make, is what is the point of having Maddie’s face in a golf cart? The whole run of these posts has been about the media, not the ‘event’. A feeding frenzie driven by the media (be it Northern Rock or Maddy or whatever) is making a noise for the sake of making a noise and filling pages. I think the media has a job to inform not add to the noise which detracts from the real issues.AnnoNick (not the Nick bit – that’s my name!!)

  27. Fair point. I suppose this thread proves that the subject generates a huge emotional response, which I guess the tabloids have fed upon. I agree it doesn’t help the situation, but then the whole case has become a circus now. Personally I would be using the donated funds to employ a top notch private detective to try and find Maddy, as the Portuguese police seem to have decided already that she this is a murder case and no longer a missing child case. One cannot blame the McCanns for using the media to keep the case in the public eye back at the start in May. They were not to know that the media would go into saturation coverage (and not all of it good). They were simply trying to find their daughter.

  29. I was under the impression we had a legal system that presumed innocence until proven otherwise in a court of law, shame the media can’t keep their paws of this essential aspect of our constitution in their need to sell papers.Last week the McCann’s were being virtually tarred and feathered after the discovery of ‘DNA evidence’ in the boot of the family car. ‘DNA Evidence’ as far as the gutter press lead us to believe means they found Madeline’s blood! IN THE BOOT! The parents MUST be guilty as the car was hired after they reported her missing blah blah blahOf course, Madeleine’s DNA would’ve been in the boot, that’s where suitcases go, and obviously Madeline’s clothes would’ve been in the suitcase unless the family were planning on her running about in the niff for a fortnight. For fucks sake.Andrew heard you on Radio 4 last night, jolly good show.

  31. One thing I don’t understand is the (apparent) back seat attitude of the British police. The McCanns are all British subjects and have the right to demand protection/resolution from the Crown, wherever they are in the world. The U.S. can be criticised for a lot, but they take a more proactive approach to their citizens being in trouble overseas than the U.K. appears to. I’d like to think that behind the scenes stuff is happening but as the weeks roll by I’m not so sure. Maybe the papers, and the sensationalist Kay Burley, could usefully ask a few questions about that point for a change?

  33. The McCanns find themselves in a strange position now. No one really wants to come out in their defence too vehemently, just in case they did it. There could be a lot of egg on faces, and no one wants that. Of course when it’s discovered they didn’t have anything to do with the girl’s disappearace they’ll say they always thought as much. And if they did do it… Me, I’m just sitting back and watching the story unfold.

  35. Thank you Andrew for defending my joke. It was indeed targeted at the media and the type of people who call Madeleine “Maddy”, in a vain hope of feeling involved. In fact the term “Maddy” was coined by the media and is not actually used by her family.

  37. Just seen an advert on the telly for one of the weekly gossip mag-rags. Lead line:”Kerry (Katatonia) on the McCanns!”Jesus. As if things weren’t bad enough for them, now they’ve got the Queen of Iceland and family fuck-ups ‘helping out’. “I’ll cook, luv, 99p pizza and 10p MadBurger, anyone?”This is getting too silly now.

  39. Yes, I saw that too. I Couldn’t believe my eyes. Apparently, earlier this week Jordan had a pop at them in some magazine. Someone who makes money selling stories about her ill son, is castigating them for their parenting skills. The end is nigh.

  41. I think a lot of people are lapping up the media coverage because so many have watched that many Crackers etc they think they can solve it from the ‘evidence’ on the pages of the tabloid. That and people have become aware of incidents when police do let some people go public in a bid to trip them up so now at any police conference coverage you spy on the family’s every reaction and come up with the very scientific ‘I don’t like the look of them’.
