Charming!

Rough justice from the Bunty sisterhood
Here are four back covers from issues of the Bunty Picture Library from 1967. Pin-ups for girls, role models if you like. The bitchiness comes from the captions, which you should read in descending order.

Cheers! Judy Geeson doesn’t get a “beautiful”, she’s merely “talented”. But Shirley Anne Field (my favourite of the lot, for what it’s worth, Bunty Junta) is a plain old “star of stage and screen.” Her only adjective is British. Miaow! Who needed Heat in 1967?

Mind you, Virginia McKenna may be “beautiful”, especially with that light shining in her eyes, but she’s not “talented” like the un-beautiful Judy Geeson. The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there. As you were.

  1. I DO hope there’s a reason that your hanging around old issues of ‘Bunty’, Andrew…The past is indeed a far away galaxy. Is it right and proper for us to get a bit chin-stroky about it sometimes? Well, I think so. Just today I was discussing with a friend how I used to go out on my bike on Sundays, my parents didn’t know where I was, no mobiles, and as long as I was home before dark…hold on, didn’t someone write a book about this?Good pics though! I think Judy Geeson’s beautiful.

  3. Wow! She retired from acting to become a school teacher didn’t she? How exciting. Tell her she may have left acting behind, but she will live forever in the two Carry On films she did, and in Bless This House. Not many teachers can say that. There’s a really nice recent picture of her in Gallery 2 on Robert Ross’s website here.

  7. I have some old ‘Girl’ comics from the Fifties. Their idea of pin-ups were Donanld Sinden, The Duke of Edinburgh and Humphrey Lyttleton, wearing a tank-top and blowing his instrument. It’s different for girls….

  9. My parents know Virginia McKenna and whenever they’d see her around town would comment on how serenely beautiful she was looking, especially my mum. I have to say she’s my favourite in A Town Like Alice.

  11. Andrew, I’ll pass it on. Actually Rossie’ll be there as well as it’s a party for a mutual pal.Ah, a Chelsea boy. 20 years out of St Martin’s myself. Chose the college because of the proximity to the Leicester Square cinemas from Long Acre. Oh, I’m getting all misty-eyed just thinking about it.

  13. You didn’t live at Ralph West Halls did you, Dog? (I once interviewed Richard Williams, by the way, for Radio 4. He was nuts, in a good way. You worked with him, didn’t you?)

  15. Andrew, yeah, first year at Ralph West. And had a park view instead of the estate opposite.Oh Dick was certainly nuts, in a good way. I worked on the Rabbit straight out of art school and then later with Dick on The Thief and Cobbler. This was up until he got the money to make it. As soon as he got the funding I was off because I knew it was going to be a train wreck. Which was a great shame.

  17. Gino Tambini…It took a while for the name to sink in but… did he go on to do an MA at Chelsea? Because he did his BA at St Martin’s with me.(sorry if I’m turning this into Friends Reunited).
