Pricks on the radio!

Well, almost. These larks occured on the Russell Brand Show on 6 Music this morning, between 10 and 1pm. I missed the context, but Russell, 6 Music’s star signing, and his comedy sidekicks Trevor and Matt were moved to disrobe whilst on air, thus captured by the studio webcams, which take pictures automatically every five minutes. Without the webcams, this would, of course, have been pointless radio, but it turned into something of an event. They even removed their pants at one point, sufficient to be warned by someone high up at the BBC to cease and desist – such censorship very much grist to the crazy comedian’s mill. Fortunately, the webcam missed any penis display. I was sitting upstairs in the 6 Music office, preparing for my 2 o’clock show and was moved to email the gentlemen and remind them that other presenters would be using the furniture over which they were nakedly draped.

In this second picture you can see that Matt, the long-haired sidekick, is actually in his pants, but these were later removed, and that is my chair! (In the top picture you can see Julie Cullen, in the green, pre-recording something in the next-door studio. In fact, she was the first to use the arse-chair for The Music Week, which comes between Brand and my show.) I’ll admit, even though I was a fan of Russell on Celebrity Big Brother’s Big Mouth with his weird Dickensian speaking style and dandyish gait, I was unsure about his arrival at 6 Music, where all before him were expected to bow. And there was a lot of argy bargy to begin with. But, he seems to have bedded in, as they say in radio, and, what with his podcast hovering around the outside of the Top 10 Podcasts after just a couple of weeks, and this pants business, and Noel Gallagher being on the phone again (Russell is a celebrity magnet), he appears to be a juggernaut, and resistance is futile. And there is a huge groundswell of objection to him on the 6 Music Message Boards, so he must be doing something right.

  1. And it doesn’t even look like it was to get a second week’s wear from them…There was quite a large groundswell of objection to Thatcher but I’m still struggling to see what she was doing right. I don’t frequent the message boards mind. Russell Brand has a very quick wit: he frequently leaves you wondering where that came from. But that Dickensian thing is really going to grate in time, ain’t it? My only objections to his arrival at 6Music are that he’s the last thing I want to listen to on a Sunday morning and I’m not sure he brings the station any closer to the music that matters. I’m not trying to resist him, but I’m not listening to his show either.

  3. If I was Danny Kaye, and I’m not, I can’t help thinking I’d be in “the king is in the altogether” mode now. Much as I love 6Music, I cannot help but feel that Russell B is very much in the “Emperor’s New Clothes” category. I don’t like him. He is quite dull. If ‘VerMusic’ as Smash Hits might have once called it really wanted a comedian to host it’s mid morning slot, they might have done us all a favour if they’d poached Jimmy Carr from Xfm.Although, that said, if I had my way, the Sunday mid morning show would be presented by little Jon Holmes, off of The Now Show, and other quality radio programmes. And Andrew, judging by the photos, maybe, just maybe, you should invest in some Wet Wipes.

  5. I’m with Dave on this one. I did try listening to him once (before I’d seen him due to not being a Big Brother fan) and wondered if I’d accidentally got the wrong radio station. I applaud skinny men in make up and he came across as intelligent on Jonathan Ross, but I prefer every other 6Music DJ I’ve heard, to him. Also, if you’re going to show your pants, at least wear sexy or comedy ones.

  7. Nice mention for Jon Holmes, there, Gari . . . Jon is back on Radio 2 next Saturday in the return of The Day The Music Died, alongside Robin Ince and, well, me.My comment about the message boards was flippant, Dave. It’s just that if you frequent the BBC radio ones (and Radio 2 is the worst!), you’ll find an awful lot of moaning about change. It’s rather wearying. Enthusiasts don’t seem to spend much time on message boards do they?

  9. well, I like the Brand style. much more than Jimmy Carr’s smugger than thou simpering attitude. He plays some excellent ‘tracks’, is witty and a good addition to the 6music roster.Of course, I prefer Andrew’s presenting style, but then I’d be reading Russell’s blog and not Andrew’s if I didn’t!You can’t like all the presenters, all of the time, etc etc

  11. I love 6music.As well as satisfying all my indie-rock needs (A House on daytime radio!), shows like Mint, the Funk Show and the Freak Zone have broadened my horizons. But Russell Brand? I had to turn the radio off yesterday, he was so irritating. These pics only confirm my opinions.(Sorry. I’m not this grumpy normally, but he really is f’in awful)

  13. Sometimes Russell is good and sometimes he is not so good. Like most people (and one of the 6music daytime DJs), he is not so good when he seems to be trying too hard or when he gets carried away. The first time I heard him on 6music was on his first show for about 10 minutes. He was very calm and seemed quite natural. I heard a lot of yesterdays show and he seemed to get more grating the more excitable he got. Although he was funny at times too.

  15. I hate this twat. Another one of those ultra-irritating, utterly charmless C4 types, like Justin Lee Collins, etc. What on earth is he doing with a radio show?

  19. I’ve only listened to Russell’s radio show once and didn’t think much of it, this was mainly due to Karl Pilkington doing his Miserable Idiot Producer routine that he “perfected” on the Ricky Gervais Xfm show. Not a fan.Russell however I do like a lot. He obviously had a very wide general knowledge and isn’t afraid of throwing an obtuse literary or historical reference into a flippant conversation about Big Brother.

  21. Just to be clear, my comment about Thatcher was also fairly flippant: we all know that she dragged this country onto its knees when it was on its arse (or whatever that bloke said on Sunday’s show). I haven’t visited the 6Music message boards for a long time but I bet that knob is still complaining about Jane Gazzo in every post.

  23. Hmm. First let me say how refreshing it is to read a BBC employee (Andrew) being so upfront about things like this. Keepin’ it real there, breh. I liked Russell Brand at first, long ago when he was doing genuinely interesting things on MTV. But he has become extremely irritating now. He’s just TOO much. And Jimmy Carr? I’m seeimgly one of the only people in the country who utterly adores him. I’d LOVE for him to be on the BBC as I can’t get up in time for his XFM show and they have no such thing as Listen Again. Plus their stream quality is terrible.

  25. Xfm is very poor these days. Jimmy Carr is one of the last good things on it, it’s him and the lovely Lauren Laverene, should never have got rid of Kevin Greening. However, I’m just happy to discover that radio still stirs passions in people…Dear The Buggles, it appears that you were a bit premature when you suggested that the Radio Star was killed by Video. (I prefered Kid Dynamo)

  27. Xfm is awful. I frequently go off on rants about how it used to be so much better in ’98!And as much as I dislike Jimmy Carr in general, he is pretty good on the radio. He’s much more agreeable. His TV persona does him no favours.

  29. I personally think XFM has really turned a corner, not least since the arrival of Lucio in the afternoon. I like Sean Keaveney, and Lauren, and Eddy Temple-Morris, and Adam and Joe. It was certainly more amateurish and unpredictable when it started, and I loved it then, but it’s much improved. (6 Music has a much less conservative music policy though!)

  31. I have never got Russell Brand. Now Robin Ince (plug for The Day The Music Died) is much funnier, and friendlier. I am just typing this because he liked my badge when I met him last week. I love to show off.

  33. Russell Brand takes 6Music away from its target audience and in a direction I don’t think i like. As long as its confined to a single slot and I can hide away from the inanity until another programme comes on I don’t really care. If this kind of programming spreads to other parts of the schedule I fear that the bets music station on the network will be lost to us forever.
