  1. Can I just say how very sorry I am Andrew. We lost a Cat (Bo-Bo) a couple of years ago and it was very hard to take. But the very same week we went to a local rescue centre and got two beautiful moggies (Willow and Aimee). This is a difficult time but don’t leave it to long to get another Cat, you won’t be replacing Chillibut giving another animal a loving and caring home. All the BestIan

  3. I’m really sorry to hear that Andrew – I’m lucky enough to have my old moggy sat beside me now, but I know that I will be devastated when she goes. RIP Chilli.

  5. Chilli’s sister, Pepper, is still here. We’re glad she is, but in some ways, it’s stranger with just one of them being gone. She keeps looking for Chilli. Thank you for your kind words.

  7. Oh dear lord, I’m so sorry. Our cat, Dylan, suffered some kind of fit last year and had to be put to sleep. He was an indoor cat, so was always around, making it so much worse when he wasn’t. I know what you’re going through. Take good care of Pepper.Doug

  9. You have my sympathies too. And I’d second Ian’s advice about getting another cat. It can seem like a betrayal but you’re putting some of that love to good use.

  11. Mine too, I’ve heard a fair bit about Chilli; I don’t suppose she cared about being famous but why would you when you look like that. 2 years ago I didn’t want to talk about the passing of our ginger tom from cancer – the same as his brother a few years earlier; both had years of mischief left in them. Georgie was given a few weeks to live at the beginning of the year but made it through to the end of summer, and that was after surviving an accident as a youngster (which left him minus 1 top canine) and another very serious illness. I wish they’d had longer but their lives were good. Somehow they’re all special.

  13. We adopted a cat a few years back who had clearly lived a tough, outdoors, unpampered life and was thus very clingy and keen to come in our house. She ended up with mouth cancer. But we took solace from the fact that her last year was spent, indoors, loved (by us, if not the other two cats!) – it really was a “quality of life” issue come the end. It’s an appalling choice to have to make, isn’t it?

  15. Sorry about your loss Andrew…I’m not normally one of those “oh, here’s a poem which will make it all better” people, but i saw this poem on the tube once, under their ‘Poems On The Underground’ season and i thought it was dead nice..I want him to have another living summer,to lie in the sun and enjoy the douceur de vivre –because the sun, like golden rum in a summer, is what makes an idle cat un tout petit peu ivre – I want him to lie stretched out, contented, revelling in the heat, his fur all dry and warm, an Old Age Pensioner, retired, resented by no one, and happinesses in a bee like swarm to settle on him – postponed for another season that last fated hateful journey to the vet from which there is no return (and age the reason), which must soon come – as I cannot forget.i have no idea who it’s by but i like it..always have.regards, M.

  17. So sorry to hear about your loss Andrew. I have two old cats, Columbo (continuing a tradition of naming my cats after TV detectives, I used to have Magnum as well) and Kelly (a cat abandoned in a field), and I know how hard it will be when they go. My thoughts and prayers are with you. My sister is a RSPCA inspector in Surrey, so if you want to re-home a cat, let me know.

  19. Andrew – sorry about the loss of your friend. Pets have a clear advantage or two over mere human beings. They give love unconditionally and make you feel good always. I think we (the humans) get the better part of the deal.

  21. As with the above I’m sad to read of your loss, It’s never easy when a beloved pet dies.I had the unenviable task of burying my old cat Hobbs a few months ago. I’m not ashamed to say I blubbed like a big girl.He now resides in a corner of the garden beneath a clump of catnip that he used to lie in, bombed out of his head, most summer days. It’s what he would of wanted…

  23. I cried like a big lassie too, when I had to leave the vets without old Dylan – could barely see to drive home. Have been to several family funerals where I’ve been less upset. I agree with Peter – I think it’s the unconditional love you get.

  25. So sorry to hear about that Andrew. I can imagine what you’re going through.I’ve just dropped my Ingrid off at the cattery and that’s hard enough. The memories live forever.

  27. Can I just say how much these messages have helped me through this. It’s nice to know that so many people have similar feelings and experiences. And what really warms my heart is that so many of the messages comes from men. Caught between the extremes of the “New Man” of the 80s and the enduring lad culture of the 90s, something good seems to have happened.

  29. I remember when my parent’s cat Rupert died in my arms in the car on an emergency run to the vet. I was 19 or 20 and wept like a child. Seven years on I still feel tearful. He was an outdoorsy cat who’d run away from home ten years earlier and had chosen my Mum and Dad as his adoptive parents. Old, thin, constantly dribbling, clearly unwell, but with the prettiest face and beautiful eyes. He was the friendliest and most affectionate cat you could hope for. Aged fifteen, he died barely a year after he was welcomed into the family. A sad end, but I was glad he died in loving surroundings. So sorry to hear of your loss Andrew.

  31. Glad to have been of some assistance, no matter how small. It must have been really hard to do your shows at the weekend with all of this going on.Keep your chin up, chum.

  33. It’s probably not unwarrantable speculation to suggest that a disproportionate amount of your… uh… demographic have houses that smell a bit funny and black trousers that are never quite clean. So we know whereof we speak when we say: (a) this is the worst kind of sorrow, and we sympathise in the truest sense of the word; and (b) it really is good advice to give thought to honouring Chilli’s memory by seeking another deserving house-guest (and, plainly, any furry face that ends up ’round your way will have landed right on his or her feet).Sincere condolences from another Bloke of a Certain Age.

  35. Hey Andrew, sorry to read about Chilli. We have a new feline family member following 17 year old Benson’s last visit to the vet, and although Martha has a lot to live up to, she’s doing a pretty good job. Apart from peeing on the bed at 5am this morning. But you forgive quickly, don’t you. It’s tough, but pretty soon you start smiling when you remember the things that they got up to.

  37. I have lost 4 cats in my short life of 20 years, 2 missing and 2 dying and there is nothing quite as sad. I am so sorry for you and Pepper, who must be equally confused and upset. Chin up.

  39. I wish too pass on my condolences. Despite not ever having a cat I know what it’s like to lose a pet and you do get very attatched to them, My girlfriend’s cat died at the age of 20 a few years ago and it was older than her at the time, a hard thing to get used to.Best wishes.

  41. Hello Andrew,Really sorry. Our cat died last year. We got him because someone threw him out of a van window on the M6 when he was only 8 weeks old. My dad picked him up off the hard shoulder and when he died he was 18.Anyway, hope you are coping ok. Like the pictures.Best wishesPolly

  42. Still have our old cat’s collar, just can’t get rid of it. In a while you’ll be able to think about Chilli and just smile. One thing about cats is that they never really leave you, years after we lost our beloved ginger tom I can still get something out of drawer and find some of his fur…….hmm, that doesn’t say much for my domesticity! Chin up, Nem

  43. Hey Andrew. I’ve been there too. We adopted Shelley as a stray when she was just a few weeks old. Like your two she tended to hide whenever anyone came to visit, so they didn’t realise we had a cat. The most traumatic day of my life was when she died during a visit to the vet. My husband and I were unconsolable. She was 14 though and we did feel we had given her a good life. It took a year or so before we considered getting another cat and then events overtook us when the beautiful and friendly black and white cat who’d been visiting us for some months decided to adopt us. We call her Cleo – not that she cares – she is of course her own cat, and we are her humans. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

  44. I’m sorry you lost your Chilli. We had to put down our Eloise a few months ago and it’s such an awful adjustment. Sometimes I think I see her out of the corner of my eye, and realize it’s a pair of shoes! I miss her.Try to smile each time you find one of Chilli’s toys.

  45. Hi,I got to ur blog when searching for my cat’s name BoBo. He went missing 2 years ago and I still can’t let it go. I’m sorry for your loss. I know no words can describe it. Ironically yesterday I thought finally I’m over his loss and will only smile when I look back at my memories with him. I just broke down like a baby when I saw this page. My point is, its going to take time and thats Ok.
